I agree about the text editing improvements, but I actually really appreciate the more organic homepage. When systems always show the latest content first, it doesn't necessarily surface what's most relevant.
More importantly, this approach removes the pressure to constantly perform or create for quantity's sake. Knowing people might discover my work at any time - not just in those few minutes after posting - feels liberating.
So I can't agree with timeline sorting. I think organizing thoughts strictly by when they were posted can create unhealthy productivity pressure and doesn't always serve readers or writers best.
Thanks Scott, I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment. I'm glad you enjoyed it and gave you a chuckle, not many of them around at the moment it seems!
I laughed, and I learned 😁 my 74 year old Mom told me about Substack a month ago, after I had been complaining yet again about how Mean and nasty FB has gotten over the past… well, since the election down below us. I’m still navigating the site lol, but I do love the Feel Here 🥰 Plus, I’m super proud to be Canadian lol 🙌🇨🇦❤️
I have! And I will again lol ☺️ as I love the creativity, humorous, insightful, Intelligent!, and Diverse, Equal, and Inclusive! As a 3rd Generation Canadian, these Ideals were instilled in me young by my Single, Hardworking Mother ❤️ before I first set foot in a church. So I am very excited to be Amongst My People here 🙌😁🌈❤️🇨🇦
Food for thought here that you've served up. I too love Substack - and yes, after seven months, I'm up to a grand total of...34 subscribers. But I've come to accept that I'm a marathoner, not a sprinter. I can only run the race I can and not someone else's, and can only effectively compete with myself, not the other thousands-odds ones with a gazillion subscribers they got in zero flat.
I think that the only way to keep Substack from not going the way social media has gone - or at least, to keep as much of what its best features are now for as long as possible - is to see Substack as ours, to take a sense of proprietorship over it in terms of our content. This is the leverage for as long as we own the rights to our content. It might not be enough in the long run, but like unions, like our dignity, it's what we can hold onto and fight for.
Hey Lee, thanks for taking the time to read and come up with an incredibly considered response. I couldn’t agree more. I started with a lofty goal of 500 subscribers in the first year. Rough number plucked from the air, don’t think I’ll get there, but that’s OK. Everyone with a gazillion subscribers once had 34, so keep going good my friend.
And thank you, Gary! I see so many posts and notes on Substack with people gushing over their exhilaration being on it, and I feel that way too - but I want to clear-headed on things. At my age (62), I've been around and can't afford to be under illusions. But having said that - right now, it feels good to be on here!
Excellent! I couldn’t have said it better myself. I have been working desperately to find my way around the maelstrom. One technique I am trying is to block people, not for being offensive, but just to reduce the flow. It should not be so difficult to customize the Substack experience. As you well know, death comes to us all and we can’t waste time reading drivel.
I don't care that much about Substack. It's a social media internet thing and I do not expect a single thing from it. I'm just having a good time. Your little career is your problem.
Thanks Hilary, appreciate your comments. I’ll try and stay fearless but pissing people off, including but not limited to the enemy, seems to just happen naturally!

Thanks Caroline, that’s actually a great point. I think part of me does (begrudgingly) quite like the randomness. Don’t tell anyone ;-)
Now I have to write my own eulogy- The Death of Claudia 😉
A living eulogy I hope! I look forward to reading it! ;-)
Very clever. Chuckled and nodded in agreement all the way through.
Thanks Scott, I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment. I'm glad you enjoyed it and gave you a chuckle, not many of them around at the moment it seems!
This is brilliant🙌
Thanks errr Borderline, glad you liked it. ;-)
Sorry, I couldn’t get through it.
Hey Jeri, that’s ok. I appreciate you read any of it.
Brilliant piece 👏
Digital Loki was a worthy Inclusion 😉
I knew there was a reason I liked you lol
😂
Thanks Naz! As a big marvel fan, any opportunity to get a reference in must be taken! Excelsior ;-)
Marvel superfan here too 😊
This was great! Thank you! 😁🙌❤️🇨🇦
Awww, thank you Cassandra, thanks for taking the time to read and comment on it. I'm glad you liked it!

Thanks for reading, glad it made you lol ;-)
tbh i did not read the title just cracked me up superbly.
If I can make people read it without spending hours thinking of a title, I’m on to something ;-)
you definitely are Gary

I’m glad you feel that way. I wish you every success and thanks again.
i was thinking about this for a while, good job
Hey Zəhra, thanks for reading. You definitely should write your version! Love to know what you think!
Thank you so much for your comment! I appreciate your idea
Excellent piece.
Thank you Melanie! Appreciate you taking the time to read it and I’m glad you liked it. Have a great day.
Love it !!! We must all think the same.
‘So we are left with our left-aligned text, our ragged edges, our uneven right-hand margins’ cracked me up 😃 this bugs me big time 🤣
I know right! How hard can it be! (Says someone who has absolutely no idea how hard it can be!).
🤣

Thanks Michael, there's always the mute option but I agree, should be easier. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. Always appreciated.
The Death of Substack?
Because it’s written in the style of a eulogy, it’s not meant literally; Substack isn’t dying (at least I hope not). Hope you still enjoy it though!

Thanks Hilary. Glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks for taking the time to read it. My next one will be a full critique on my own failings as a writer. You’ll love it
